Tips for a story that resonates

  • Start with a moment — a specific day or turning point, not a summary
  • Be honest about the hard parts — that's what connects people
  • Share one thing that made a real difference for you
  • End with what you'd tell a new caregiver who feels alone right now
  • Your full name is optional — many caregivers use first name only

How to Get Started — Step by Step

Not sure where to begin? Start here. Most caregivers who qualify for compensation simply didn't know how to apply. Follow these steps to get connected to the right program for your situation.

1
Check Medi-Cal Status
Most paid caregiving programs require your loved one to have Medi-Cal. If they don't have it, apply free at BenefitsCal.com — many qualify automatically.
2
Call 2-1-1
Dial 2-1-1 (free, 24/7) to speak with a benefits specialist who will identify every program you qualify for and help start your applications.
3
Request an IHSS Assessment
Call the LA County IHSS office at (888) 944-4477. A social worker will visit your home and determine how many paid hours are authorized.
4
Enroll as a Provider
Once your loved one's IHSS is approved, enroll yourself as their personal care provider. You'll receive a regular paycheck from the state of California.
5
File for Paid Family Leave
If you're currently employed, file for California Paid Family Leave (PFL) through the EDD to replace your wages while you take time off to caregive.
6
Explore VA Benefits (Veterans)
If your loved one is a veteran, contact the VA Caregiver Support Line at 1-855-260-3274 to learn about monthly stipends and additional benefits available to you.
Important Note: Program eligibility, pay rates, and hours vary based on your loved one's care needs, income, and specific circumstances. The information above is a general guide — always contact the program directly or call 2-1-1 to get accurate, up-to-date information for your situation. Rates shown reflect 2024–2025 LA County figures.

Cancer Patient Support

Cold Cap Therapy for Hair Loss

Scalp cooling can help cancer patients keep their hair during chemotherapy. Here's what it is, who offers it, and how to access financial help.

🧊

What is Cold Cap Therapy (Scalp Cooling)?

Cold cap therapy — also called scalp cooling — uses a tightly fitted helmet-like cap chilled to very low temperatures before, during, and after chemotherapy infusions. The cold reduces blood flow to hair follicles, limiting how much chemotherapy reaches them and significantly reducing hair loss for many patients.

It does not work for every chemo regimen or every patient, but studies show it can reduce hair loss by 50–70% for many breast cancer patients on common chemotherapy drugs. It is FDA-cleared and available at many oncology centers in the LA area. Your oncologist can tell you if it's a good fit for your treatment plan.

⭐ Featured Organization

Your Cold Cap Concierge

Founded by Jermaine Bradley · Los Angeles, CA

Your Cold Cap Concierge provides personalized, hands-on support for cancer patients using cold cap therapy during chemotherapy. Jermaine Bradley and his team are trained cold cap specialists who accompany patients to their infusion sessions — managing the cap rotations, timing, and fit so patients and their families don't have to navigate the process alone. This is compassionate, expert care designed to make scalp cooling as effective and stress-free as possible.

Treatment Grants Breast Cancer Focus

How to Get Started with Cold Cap Therapy

Step 1
Talk to your oncologist — confirm which chemo drugs you'll receive and ask if scalp cooling is medically appropriate for your regimen.
Step 2
Check if your infusion center has a Paxman or Dignitana system. If not, ask about patient-managed options like Penguin Cold Caps.
Step 3
Contact your insurance to ask about coverage. Some plans cover scalp cooling — always get it in writing before your first session.
Step 4
Apply for financial assistance through The Rapunzel Project or Hair to Stay if cost is a barrier. Applications are straightforward and turnaround is often quick.
Step 5
If using a patient-managed system, line up a caregiver or volunteer to help swap caps during infusion. The Rapunzel Project can help connect you with trained volunteers.
💡

Insurance tip: As of 2023, several major insurers including Aetna, Cigna, and some Blue Cross plans have begun covering scalp cooling. Even if your plan doesn't currently cover it, your oncologist can submit a letter of medical necessity to appeal the denial — many patients have succeeded this way. Ask your oncology social worker for help drafting the letter. You can also call the Cancer Legal Resource Center at (866) 843-2572 for free legal help appealing insurance denials.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply for a Grant

1
Screen for Programs First
Visit BenefitsCheckUp.org or call 2-1-1 and enter your ZIP code and diagnosis. This tells you exactly which programs you qualify for before you spend time applying.
2
Gather Your Documents
Most grants require: proof of diagnosis (doctor's letter), proof of income (tax return or pay stubs), insurance card or denial letter, and a photo ID. Get these ready before you start any application.
3
Get a Letter of Medical Necessity
Call your doctor's office and ask for a Letter of Medical Necessity. This single document unlocks most grant programs and takes a doctor's office 1–2 days to prepare.
4
Apply to Multiple Programs at Once
There is no penalty for applying to multiple grants simultaneously. Submit to PAF/TotalAssist, HealthWell Foundation, CancerCare, and any disease-specific program all at the same time to maximize your chances.
5
Track Every Application
Write down the date you applied, confirmation number, and the contact person for each program. Many grants have limited funds and are awarded first-come, first-served — follow up within 5–7 business days.
6
If Denied — Appeal Immediately
A denial is not final. Request the specific reason, update your application with any missing documents, and resubmit. You can also call the Cancer Legal Resource Center at (866) 843-2572 for free help appealing insurance or grant denials.

Lower Your Utility Bills — Local Programs That Pay

Los Angeles utility providers are required by law to offer assistance programs. Most people never apply — here is every program, what it covers, and exactly how to get it.

Start Here — Apply for All Programs at Once

One application through LADWP or SoCalGas can auto-enroll you in multiple discount programs. You only need to prove income once — then you may qualify for every program below.

1
Gather Documents
Most recent utility bill, proof of income (pay stub, SSI letter, or Medi-Cal approval), and ID for all household members.
2
Apply Online or by Phone
Visit your utility's website or call them directly. Most applications take under 15 minutes and can be done in Spanish.
3
Get Auto-Enrolled in CARE
If you receive Medi-Cal, SNAP, SSI, or CalFresh, you may be automatically enrolled in utility discounts — call to confirm.
4
Stack Programs
You can often combine multiple programs (e.g., CARE + FERA + LIHEAP) for maximum savings. Each covers a different part of your bill.
5
Request Past-Due Help
If you owe a balance, ask specifically about REACH grants and arrearage management programs — these can wipe out past-due amounts entirely.
6
Renew Annually
Most programs require annual recertification. Set a reminder — losing benefits mid-year because of a missed renewal is common and avoidable.

💡 Ways to Lower Your Insurance Costs

🔍
Compare at least 3 quotes Rates vary 40–60% between insurers for the same coverage. Use PolicyGenius or SelectQuote for free side-by-side comparisons.
📅
Buy younger & healthier A 40-year-old pays roughly half what a 55-year-old pays. Every year you wait increases premiums significantly.
🚭
Quit smoking — save 50%+ Smokers pay 2–3x more for life insurance. After 12 months smoke-free, you can reapply at non-smoker rates.
📦
Bundle with home or auto Many insurers give 5–15% discounts when you bundle life insurance with existing home or auto policies.
💳
Pay annually, not monthly Paying your premium annually instead of monthly typically saves 3–8% — insurers charge a convenience fee for monthly billing.
📉
Right-size your coverage You only need 10–12x your annual income, minus existing assets. Don't over-buy — term for protection, burial policy for final expenses.
🏦
Use a no-exam policy Accelerated underwriting (no exam) is now often the same price as traditional underwriting. Faster approval, same price.
🤝
Check AARP & union benefits AARP, union memberships, and professional associations often offer group rates significantly lower than individual market rates.

Direct cremation (no viewing, no service at the funeral home) costs $700–$2,000 compared to $8,000–$12,000 for a traditional burial. A separate memorial service can still be held at any location — a home, park, church, or beach — at no extra cost.

Eco Option
Green / Natural Burial

Natural burial (no embalming, biodegradable casket or shroud) is often significantly less expensive than traditional burial and is available in the LA area. Green burials are legal in California and are growing rapidly as a dignified, meaningful, lower-cost alternative.

Cost-Saving Tip
Buy Your Own Casket — Funeral Homes Must Accept It

Under the FTC Funeral Rule, funeral homes cannot legally refuse a casket you purchase elsewhere or charge a "handling fee" for using it. Third-party caskets from Costco, Amazon, or direct manufacturers cost $900–$2,500 vs. $2,500–$10,000 at a funeral home.

Legal right — can't refuse Costco · Amazon options No handling fee allowed
